Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh, a prominent pediatrician, has resigned from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) over a dispute with pharmaceutical companies regarding the marketing of ORS products. She alleges the products have been misleadingly endorsed, sparking legal threats over her outspoken social media campaign.
Santosh shared with PTI that pharmaceutical companies issued legal notices, citing potential defamation suits if she didn’t retract her statements. Her posts, according to the firms, allegedly disparaged their brands in pursuit of commercial gains and social media clout.
Amidst this controversy, Santosh demanded the academy's support, which was not forthcoming. She has since communicated concerns about these marketing practices to the Indian authorities, while advocating adherence to FSSAI guidelines prohibiting the misuse of the term 'ORS' on labels.
