Britain's health authorities announced that early laboratory analysis confirms the Bexsero vaccine's effectiveness against the meningitis strain behind a deadly outbreak in southeast England. The outbreak, linked to the ST-41/44 meningococci group, has resulted in two fatalities and prompted urgent public health interventions.
The UK Health Security Agency highlighted the 'important reassurance' provided by the vaccine's coverage, yet further investigations continue with 18 confirmed cases and 11 more under scrutiny. In response, 2,360 vaccinations and nearly 10,000 antibiotic courses have been administered.
Despite expanding vaccination clinics, officials remain cautious, unable to declare the outbreak contained. Typically, one case of invasive meningitis occurs daily in the UK, but the outbreak has spurred nationwide demand for the MenB vaccine, with supply shortages reported by pharmacy chain Boots.
