Supreme Court Pressures FSSAI on Front-of-Pack Labels

The Supreme Court has asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to provide its stance on a proposal to introduce front-of-pack labelling for high-sugar, salt, and fat packaged foods. This initiative is intended to aid consumers in making healthier choices quickly and easily.

During a hearing on a public interest litigation initiated by the charitable trust 3S and Our Health Society, the court stressed the significance of such labelling in protecting public health. Front-of-pack labels, suggested in this case, could function as a warning for consumers about unhealthy food contents.

Despite FSSAI's ongoing efforts, including plans for consumer surveys and industry consultations, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the current progress, prompting them to demand a comprehensive response from FSSAI within four weeks.
