Germany's Double Relief: Tax-Free Worker Bonus and Fuel Discounts Approved
Germany's lower house of parliament has approved a relief package, including a tax-free worker bonus of up to 1,000 euros and a temporary fuel discount to offset higher petrol prices influenced by the Iran war. Although aimed at economic relief, economists question its focus, suggesting targeted aid instead.
Germany's lower house of parliament has given the green light to a financial relief package designed to help citizens weather soaring petrol prices linked to geopolitical tensions. This initiative includes a tax-free bonus of up to 1,000 euros for workers and a two-month fuel discount beginning in May.
The package, however, awaits approval from the upper house, expected later this Friday. The fuel relief plan, valued at 1.6 billion euros, offers a temporary reduction of 0.17 euros per liter on diesel and petrol, contingent on compliance from oil companies.
The bonus scheme permits employers to offer tax-deductible payments to employees until June 2027, raising concerns about participation amid Germany's sluggish economy. Critics argue for more strategic government support for vulnerable households, reminiscent of similar measures from the 2022 energy crisis.
