Nine workers lost their lives when militants launched an assault on a copper and gold mining site in Pakistan's turbulent Balochistan province, police reported on Thursday. The incident transpired at National Resources Limited's project in Darigwan, Chagai district, on Wednesday evening as employees wrapped up their shift, according to a senior police official.
The attack was described as targeted and timed to coincide with the end of the workers' shifts. The bodies were subsequently transported to Prince Fahad Hospital in Dalbandin. Although the mining company acknowledged the attack in a statement, it did not specify any casualties. The statement highlighted the swift response from security forces, including the Frontier Corps, who secured the area and initiated a clearance operation.
National Resources Limited reiterated its commitment to fostering local community development in Balochistan, noting that 90% of the workforce at the Darigwan site consists of local individuals. The company has recently reported significant discoveries of copper, gold, lead, and zinc. Militants have previously targeted construction sites in the province, often singling out workers from other regions.
