Surging Power Demands: Record Highs Amid Rising Temperatures

The peak power demand in the country hit a seasonal high of 239.70 GW due to increased usage of cooling appliances amid rising temperatures. The demand is expected to climb higher with sustained heatwave conditions, and might surpass the current all-time high of 250 GW set in May 2024.

The country's electricity demand reached a seasonal peak of 239.70 GW on Wednesday, driven by increased usage of air-conditioning and cooling appliances amid rising temperatures. This represents the highest power consumption recorded so far this year, according to the latest data from the power ministry.

In the first half of April, the demand remained below last year's average, with a notable surge occurring between April 16 and 20, where it fluctuated between 234.81 GW and 237.43 GW. Experts predict an upward trend in power demand as temperatures continue to rise, prompting more frequent use of cooling appliances by both residential and commercial sectors.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heatwave conditions in several regions over the coming days, fuelling concerns about further increases in electricity consumption. The peak power demand previously reached an all-time high of approximately 250 GW in May 2024, and the power ministry estimates this year's summer demand to approach 270 GW.
