Bolivia's Energy Sector Shake-up: New Leadership Amid Crisis
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has appointed Marcelo Blanco as the new energy and hydrocarbons minister, replacing Mauricio Medinaceli. This change comes amid Bolivia's fuel and U.S. dollar shortages and declining energy exports. Paz aims to revive the economy by inviting private investment and closing unprofitable state enterprises.
Bolivia's President Rodrigo Paz announced a key appointment on Wednesday, bringing Marcelo Blanco on board as the new energy and hydrocarbons minister. Blanco takes over from Mauricio Medinaceli less than six months into the current government’s term.
Prior to his appointment, Blanco served as vice minister of electricity and renewable energies. His appointment comes during a critical period. Bolivia is grappling with severe fuel shortages and a drop in U.S. dollar reserves, a situation exacerbated by a downturn in energy output and exports.
The leadership change follows President Paz's sweeping reforms after ending nearly two decades of leftist governance last November. Aiming to stabilize the economy, Paz has outlined plans to attract private investment and shut down loss-making state enterprises.
