Greece Unveils Robust Aid Package Amid Global Tensions
Greece announced €500 million in aid for households and farmers affected by the Iran war. Prime Minister Mitsotakis outlined emergency and permanent measures, including fuel and fertilizer subsidies. Despite economic gains, the country revised future growth and inflation projections due to global tensions and the Iran conflict.
On Wednesday, Greece unveiled a comprehensive aid package worth €500 million to support households and farmers affected by the ongoing Iran war. This announcement comes after the nation reported a higher budget surplus for 2025, allowing financial headroom for such initiatives.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the government's commitment to extend fuel subsidies through May and fertilizer subsidies until August. Additionally, a one-off allowance for families with children and increased aid for low-income pensioners were declared, balancing fiscal responsibility with urgent citizen needs.
Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis cited positive economic indicators driving the surplus but acknowledged global challenges, prompting revisions of growth estimates and inflation projections. The government's strategy also includes €300m of existing subsidies and a future commitment of €100m annually to aid industries and small businesses facing rising energy costs.
