A fire erupted at the newly constructed Pachpadra refinery in Rajasthan's Balotra district on Monday, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the facility. The unexpected blaze forced authorities to postpone the high-profile event and initiate an investigation into the cause of the fire.
No casualties have been reported from the incident, which saw fire tenders successfully dousing the flames in around two hours. The fire originated near the Crude Distillation Unit section, leading to a scramble as emergency teams rapidly deployed to extinguish the blaze and ensure safety.
The incident has drawn criticism from opposition figures, with allegations of safety lapses and rushed preparations. The Pachpadra refinery, a crucial project in India's energy sector, represents a significant investment exceeding Rs 79,450 crore. An official statement has confirmed that a new inauguration date will be announced soon.
