In a pivotal diplomatic move, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on Iran to safeguard freedom and safe passage through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. This marks the first such direct request from Beijing since Iran began restricting movement in the strategic waterway amidst its ongoing conflict with the United States.
Wang Yi's appeal, communicated during a phone conversation with Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi, coincided with a mediation effort by Pakistan to facilitate a new round of peace talks between the US and Iran. China, closely tied with Iran and a major importer of its oil, remains deeply concerned about the energy crisis exacerbated by the US-imposed blockade.
The Strait of Hormuz stands as a key maritime conduit, handling nearly 20% of global oil trade. Meanwhile, Iran emphasized its openness to diplomatic solutions, encouraging China to play a significant role in fostering peace. Tensions linger as the US blockade continues to challenge the fragile balance between conflict and peace.
