The European Commission is set to introduce interim measures intended to alleviate the impact of the Iran war on key sectors including agriculture and transport. A draft document, acquired by Reuters, outlines plans for grants, subsidies, and tax breaks to balance the surging costs caused by the crisis.
These measures, which are under consultation with member states, aim to address unforeseen and significant cost surges for businesses involved in agriculture, fisheries, road transport, and intra-EU shipping. This initiative arises as global fertilizer prices surge due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route.
The eventual Fertiliser Action Plan will seek to enhance the affordability and availability of fertilizers to secure food production and curb strategic dependencies, highlights Antoine Hoxha, director general at Fertilizers Europe, emphasizing the need for EU support for farmers.
