Porcupines and Monkeys: Kashmir's Crop Challenge

The Jammu and Kashmir government has unveiled a strategic plan to protect the saffron crops in Pampore from porcupine damage. Forest Minister Javed Ahmad Rana highlighted habitat-specific measures, including the removal of caves and implementing deep mesh barriers, to safeguard the fields.

In addition to these physical deterrents, the plan involves using natural repellents, such as iris and wild yam plantation, alongside motion-activated systems to ward off the porcupines. A joint documentation effort with the Saffron Research Station aims to quantify the damage and develop scientific management strategies.

Addressing monkey intrusions in Pampore's agricultural fields, initiatives including awareness campaigns and the distribution of firecrackers are underway. A coordinated action plan involving multiple departments and local communities is being formulated to ensure long-term solutions, focusing on habitat management and population control.
