Revitalizing Communities: The Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project's Impact

The Jammu and Kashmir government has laid out a comprehensive rehabilitation and resettlement plan for the Sawalkote hydroelectric project. The initiative considers the impacts on local communities and includes compensation measures for landowners as per standard practices, across Ramban, Udhampur, and Reasi districts.

The Sawalkote project, a major 1,856 MW run-of-the-river initiative on the Chenab River, significantly impacts Ramban, which accounts for the largest submergence of land and construction facilities. Despite Ramban being the most affected, officials affirm that adjoining districts will see development benefits.

Minister Javed Ahmed Rana assured that the government would not force decisions leading to resignations from legislative members. Additionally, efforts are underway to ensure all-weather road connectivity, crucial for the project's execution, with the National Highway Authority of India and Border Roads Organisation overseeing infrastructure development.
