Aluminium Production Stalled: EGA's Al Taweelah Smelter Faces Year-long Restoration
Emirates Global Aluminium's Al Taweelah smelter in the UAE, hit by an Iranian attack, might take up to a year to fully restore. The attack led to emergency shutdown and evacuation. Partial production may resume earlier, while concerns over aluminum supply affect global prices.
Emirates Global Aluminium announced that the complete restoration of its Al Taweelah smelter, damaged in a recent Iranian attack, could extend up to a year. The facility, located in the UAE, faced an emergency shutdown and full evacuation following the March 28 incident.
The attack has caused significant disruptions, particularly affecting global aluminium supply amid Middle Eastern tensions. The price of aluminium saw a substantial increase, with Benchmark aluminium on the London Metal Exchange surging by 10.4% in March.
Partial operational restoration may commence sooner, contingent on damage assessments, as the facility's alumina refinery and recycling plant consider early production resumption. This disruption is compounded by the closure of shipping channels affecting Gulf aluminium exports.
