Romania is evaluating the possibility of terminating a $427.2 million deal with Israel's Elbit Systems to purchase drones, due to delivery setbacks, announced Defence Minister Radu Miruta on Thursday.

The contract, initiated in 2022 with expected deliveries by 2025, has faced multiple postponements attributed to force majeure, with Romania accepting only the first two delays. Miruta highlighted potential contract termination as Elbit has incurred approximately 60 million euros in delay penalties.

The consideration comes as Romania, an EU and NATO member state with strategic border concerns, actively pursues its own drone production, including collaborations with Ukrainian firms, in response to regional threats from Russia.
