In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court has granted an ex-parte ad-interim injunction to safeguard the identity of Dr. Aniruddha Dhairyadhar Joshi, a renowned spiritual leader, from being manipulated through AI-generated deepfake content.
The order, passed by Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, comes in response to a suit filed by Joshi, commonly revered as 'Aniruddha Bapu.' Citing a prima facie case, the court recognized the potential for irreparable harm to Joshi’s reputation if immediate action was not taken.
The court found that advanced AI technologies were being used by unknown individuals to produce deceitful videos and images, depicting the leader in various unapproved contexts. As a result, platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have been directed to remove such content promptly and provide information about the perpetrators.
Justice Gedela further emphasized the legality protecting personality and publicity rights, noting the potential dilution of public trust in the spiritual leader. The court's directives also include a cease-and-desist order for the unidentified creators of these deepfakes and a demand for details regarding the content produced exploiting Joshi’s persona.
This case underscores the profound influence Dr. Joshi holds, drawing parallels to other notable spiritual figures, such as Aniruddhacharya Maharaj, highlighting the critical need for legal frameworks to address the misuse of emergent technologies.
