India has set a strategic roadmap for Artificial Intelligence under the Prime Minister's directive, focusing on making technology widely accessible. Aiming to tackle national challenges while creating economic and job opportunities, the Ministry of Electronics & IT confirmed its commitment through the IndiaAI Mission approved on March 7, 2024.
Structured around seven pillars—compute access, foundational models, datasets, talent development, industry partnerships, application development, and ethical AI—the mission envisions a robust, self-reliant AI ecosystem. A particular emphasis is on developing AI solutions that address societal problems like healthcare.
The government, in collaboration with the National Cancer Grid, launched the IndiaAI-NCG Cancer AI & Technology Challenge. This initiative supports joint proposals from AI innovators and clinical institutions to advance AI solutions across various phases of cancer care. The scheme received 299 proposals, which, after a meticulous evaluation, resulted in ten grants awarded across priority categories like diagnostics and patient engagement.
The evaluation framework adopts a comprehensive approach, considering factors such as clinical impact, scalability, and innovation. Initial funding is provided to selected solutions, with the possibility of increased support based on success metrics. An emphasis on ethical data use and alignment with national health goals ensures the integrity and integration of AI solutions within existing health systems.
