Historic Trade Talks: EU-Australia Deal on the Horizon

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Australia later this month to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, according to an announcement by the Commission on Wednesday. The visit is part of ongoing efforts by both sides to finalize a trade agreement.

Talks had previously stalled in 2023 due to disagreements over agricultural product access, but recent discussions have shown progress. Von der Leyen's visit is slated for March 23-25 and aims to strengthen ties between the EU and Australia, a key ally in the strategically vital Indo-Pacific region.

Australia is advocating for increased quotas for lamb and beef exports to Europe. In turn, the EU seeks improved access to Australia's critical minerals and lower tariffs on manufactured goods, making the upcoming visit crucial for advancing negotiations.
