Thousands of miles away from the Middle East, Sommai Butdee waits anxiously in Thailand's rural northeast for updates about her nephew, Panupong Muentan, missing from a Thai-flagged vessel attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.
Sommai, 58, gathered with relatives in Surin province, displaying a photo of the 27-year-old Muentan, a merchant marine graduate. Described as a devoted young man, he had aimed to support his family financially through his work at sea.
Thailand has called for Tehran’s clarification regarding the incident, amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. While twenty crew members were safely rescued, the fate of the three missing, including Muentan, remains uncertain.
