Greece Explores Small Nuclear Reactors for Energy Future
Greece is initiating a ministerial committee to investigate the potential of small nuclear reactors as a part of its energy strategy, aiming to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on lignite plants by 2028.
In a significant move towards diversifying its energy sources, Greece is establishing a ministerial committee to examine the feasibility of incorporating small nuclear reactors into its energy mix. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced this strategic decision during a nuclear power conference in Paris.
Greece currently relies heavily on renewable sources, including wind and solar power, alongside imported gas. With a plan to phase out its last lignite power plants by 2028, the country is exploring nuclear options to ensure a sustainable and predictable electricity supply.
Highlighting the innovation within the nuclear sector, Mitsotakis emphasized the need for Greece to adopt reliable base load power solutions. The ministerial committee will be tasked with making formal recommendations on how small nuclear reactors could potentially support Greece's energy needs.
