Nishant Kumar, the son of incumbent Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, held a strategic meeting with senior Janata Dal (United) leaders and young MLAs at the residence of JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha on Saturday. The party confirmed that Nishant will officially join JD(U) on Sunday.
The leaders discussed future strategies following Nitish Kumar's decision to transition to the Centre, aiming for a Rajya Sabha seat. Nishant's timely entry is seen as part of JD(U)'s plan for a seamless leadership transition after Nitish's record-breaking tenure as Chief Minister. On Thursday, Nitish filed his Rajya Sabha nomination, marking a historic shift.
Nishant Kumar's political debut also reflects a shift in JD(U)'s approach towards dynastic politics. JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar revealed that Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan) and MP Sanjay Jha proposed bringing Nishant into state politics, a suggestion that was enthusiastically embraced by the party. While Nishant, a BIT Mesra alumnus and former software engineer, has maintained a low profile, speculation is rife about his potential appointment as Deputy Chief Minister or a significant party role amid a leadership restructuring, with Nitish and Sanjay Jha moving to the Upper House.
