The government has announced an ambitious wheat procurement target of 30.3 million tonnes for the 2026-27 Rabi Marketing Season, according to a recent official statement. This decision was made during a meeting of State Food Secretaries chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution.
Wheat output is anticipated to exceed previous records, potentially reaching 120 million tonnes, supported by the largest ever sowing on 33.41 million hectares and favorable weather conditions. The Food Corporation of India is projected to maintain a stock of 18.2 million tonnes by April 2026, ensuring sufficient domestic supply.
In February, India lifted a four-year ban on the export of wheat and wheat products, authorizing an initial shipment of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat. The government is also advancing a QR code tagging pilot on foodgrain packaging, with successful trials in Andhra Pradesh and planned expansions to other regions.
