The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a $460 million results-based loan to upgrade Maharashtra's rural energy framework. This initiative seeks to modernize power lines, advocate for distributed renewable energy, and boost agricultural productivity by providing farmers with consistent daytime solar electricity for irrigation purposes.
The Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Program is aligned with the state's Power Sector Vision 2030, which emphasizes renewable energy adoption, enhanced rural power access, and the financial strengthening of the power sector. ADB also announced an additional $40 million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund, underlining its commitment to the cause.
ADB's sustained collaboration with Maharashtra aims to integrate renewable solutions, enhancing both the agricultural and energy sectors. The program plans to solarize agricultural feeders, modernize rural distribution networks, and integrate battery storage systems, while advancing green employment, particularly for women. By 2028, it aims to serve 900,000 agricultural consumers and cut greenhouse emissions significantly.
