South Korea's Nuclear Submarine Ambitions: A Diplomatic Push

During a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung voiced hopes that the U.S. would permit South Korea to acquire fuel for nuclear-propelled submarines. Lee emphasized the limitations of diesel submarines in tracking submarines from North Korea and China.

Lee proposed that with U.S. approval for fuel, South Korea could build submarines with conventional weaponry, effectively reducing the burden on the U.S. military. He noted that past administrations sought nuclear-powered submarines, but faced longstanding opposition from the U.S.

While Trump was in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, Lee also pressed for support in reprocessing spent nuclear fuel and uranium enrichment, amid ongoing bilateral discussions.
