In a significant move, Honda Motor Co Ltd has acquired a minority stake in OMC Power, making it the third Japanese firm to invest in the Indian renewable energy company. The acquisition aims to bolster OMC Power's ambitious plan to develop a 1-gigawatt green energy portfolio in India.
The investment comes as OMC ventures into a new business model deploying electric vehicle batteries as a battery energy storage system, while also repurposing old EV batteries to enhance uninterrupted power supply solutions. Sources indicate Honda has secured a 5-10% stake, with potential for future increases.
This strategic partnership marks Honda's first foray into India's distributed energy sector. The collaboration intends to extend the life cycle of EV batteries, facilitating storage-based applications and supporting Honda's vision of a resource-circulating value chain in electric motorcycle battery repurposing.
