A prolonged protest by ASHA workers in Kerala escalated on Wednesday as demonstrators marched to the residence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, demanding better wages and benefits.
The protestors, led by the Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association, faced police resistance including water cannons, as they pressed for a wage increase from Rs 7,000 to Rs 21,000 and a post-retirement benefit of Rs 5 lakh.
Clashes with police led to arrests, the confiscation of protest equipment, and physical interventions. Despite a state panel recommending a raise, workers continue to express dissatisfaction while the Centre considers increasing their fixed monthly incentive.
