A section of ASHA workers in Kerala, protesting for better compensation for 256 days, have ramped up their agitation by marching towards Cliff House, the official residence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Previously, they had conducted sit-in protests outside the state secretariat. Led by the Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association, the protestors confronted police barricades and water cannons.
They demand a hike in their honorarium from Rs 7,000 to Rs 21,000 and post-retirement benefits of Rs 5 lakh, despite a government panel's recommendation to increase the honorarium by Rs 3,000 and retirement benefits to Rs 1 lakh. The Centre has also approved increased incentives.
