In a significant step for heritage preservation, Ladakh has inaugurated India's inaugural Petroglyph Conservation Park on the banks of the Indus River. Unveiled on World Heritage Day by Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, this park is dedicated to safeguarding ancient rock carvings, known as petroglyphs, which are increasingly threatened by modern development.

With nearly 400 sites containing petroglyphs across Ladakh, these prehistoric carvings illustrate the region's ancient art and depict scenes from early human life and religious symbols. The conservation initiative is supported through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums and the Archaeological Survey of India.

The Lt Governor emphasized the importance of creating curated heritage circuits to manage tourism while promoting lesser-known sites. Labelled as 'open-air museums,' these carvings reflect centuries-old histories that require community involvement for sustainable preservation.
