In a significant legal development, a Delhi court has sentenced Syed Shahid Ahmed Kashani, a Jaipur-based art gallery owner, for attempting to export Shahtoosh wool shawls illegally. These shawls are made from the critically endangered Tibetan Antelope underfur.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate T Priyadarshini handed down the maximum sentence after a prolonged 17-year trial, marking an important precedent in wildlife protection laws. Kashani was sentenced to three years in prison, with additional charges leading to two more years.

This verdict came after rigorous investigations by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, which confirmed the shawls' composition. The global community recognizes the need to protect the Chiru, as the trade has been banned by CITES since 1975.
