Acclaimed Director Ranjith in Legal Turmoil

Renowned Malayalam film director, Ranjith, has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days following his arrest in connection with an attempted sexual assault case. The director was taken into custody late Tuesday evening in Idukki district after a female actor filed a complaint alleging assault on a film set.

The actor's accusation led to Ranjith's arrest by Kochi Police, and he was subsequently produced before a magistrate after undergoing a medical examination. This incident adds to previous allegations of harassment against Ranjith, including a 2024 complaint by a Bengali actress, drawing sharp focus on the Malayalam film industry's ongoing issues with harassment.

Ranjith's legal troubles have intensified scrutiny of the industry, especially post the Justice K Hema Committee report that highlighted harassment and abuse. The ongoing proceedings against him are being conducted under stringent confidentiality protocols.
