Patna University's historic Wheeler Senate House, a venue with a storied past, turned 100 years old recently with no official celebration to mark the occasion. The senate house has hosted numerous significant events since its inauguration in 1926, including a notable visit by Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1936.
Recently, the prominent landmark was renamed 'Jayaprakash Narayan Anushad Bhawan,' a move that has stirred controversy among heritage enthusiasts and alumni, who view the change as an erosion of the building's historical significance. This change was part of a broader refurbishment effort costing Rs 2.84 crore.
The Senate House's grand facade has been partly obscured by a new two-km double-decker flyover, making access to its historical charm slightly elusive. Despite these changes, the building's legacy remains an integral chapter in Bihar's educational history.
