Thousands of Hindu devotees flocked to Kathmandu's revered Pashupatinath temple and other Shiva temples across Nepal on Sunday to celebrate Maha Shivratri. Known as one of the most auspicious days for worshipping Lord Shiva, the day, which falls on Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi of the Hindu calendar, saw a significant influx of worshippers.
The Pashupatinath temple, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati river, opened its gates at 2:00 am, drawing around 800,000 devotees, including 30% from India. This year, additional arrangements were made, including three external lines for worshippers and extensive parking facilities across the area, to accommodate the expected number of visitors.
To ensure safety and order, over 6,000 security personnel, including members of the Nepal Army, were deployed. The preparations were especially significant as Nepal prepares for elections to elect a new Parliament on March 5. The temple, adorned with flowers and lights, welcomed 4,500 sadhus, including Naga Babas, emphasizing the cultural and spiritual importance of the occasion.
