The state of Kerala has marked a significant step in enhancing facilities for Sabarimala pilgrims with the inauguration of a modern 'edathavalam' by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Kazhakootam.
Part of a broader initiative to construct 12 such resting places across the state, this facility is developed with financial backing from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), costing approximately Rs 10 crore. The edathavalams aim to ease the plight of pilgrims who often have to rest roadside, offering amenities like dormitories, free meal halls, and secure lockers.
Originally conceptualized in 2016, the project now bears fruit under the guidance of former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran. Designed for year-round multi-purpose use, the Kazhakootam facility spans 32,000 square feet and features amenities, including dormitories for men and women, with additional features like Wi-Fi to make pilgrim stays comfortable.
