A federal judge in Boston has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's push to collect data from higher education institutions, aimed at proving race is not considered in admissions processes.
The injunction, issued by US District Court Judge F Dennis Saylor IV, comes after 17 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the data collection initiative, arguing that it risks invading student privacy and could lead to unwarranted investigations of colleges.
Despite the ruling, the Education Department maintains that taxpayers deserve transparency in how federal funds are utilized by institutions, arguing for accountability through data collection.
