No Change in BEd Duration: One-Year Program Off the Table

The Ministry of Education has dismissed the possibility of returning the Bachelor of Education (BEd) course duration to one year. This decision was communicated by Union Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, during a Lok Sabha session.

Chaudhary relayed information from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), clarifying that currently, there are no proposals to revert the BEd programme to a one-year format. The NCTE is the statutory authority for establishing norms for teacher education in the country.

Last year, NCTE considered reinstating the one-year BEd program—discontinued in 2014—to align with the National Education Policy (NEP). However, the decision to maintain the current program length remains firm.
