The Supreme Court has mandated a comprehensive review of all NCERT textbooks following contentious material found in a Class 8 social science book. Chief Justice Surya Kant and fellow justices had expected the creation of an expert committee, rather than solely relying on the NCERT for textbook revisions.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that systemic changes are being implemented. The government intends to form a domain expertise panel to scrutinize the curriculum across all classes, ensuring that no future publications will proceed without professional vetting.
In a significant move, the Supreme Court has imposed an outright ban on further releases of the contentious book. The bench highlighted concerns of a possible conspiracy to undermine the judiciary's integrity and instructed the immediate withdrawal of the book from circulation.
