In a significant move towards enhancing road safety in Kerala, the General Education and Motor Vehicles departments are set to introduce a 'road safety cadet' programme aimed at empowering children to become advocates for safer roads. This initiative reflects the government's strategic policy to integrate road safety awareness into the educational curriculum.
Announcing the programme on his social media, Minister V Sivankutty revealed that its inauguration would occur later this month in Mavelikkara, Alappuzha district. The programme's pilot was successfully conducted at John F Kennedy Memorial School. The initial phase will be rolled out across select high and higher secondary schools, focusing on government and aided institutions, throughout the upcoming academic year.
Each student cohort will comprise 30 cadets, equally divided by gender, and will undergo an extensive syllabus covering road safety, trauma care, and more. With Rs 10 lakh sanctioned for uniforms from the Kerala Road Safety Authority fund, the cadets will receive certifications after their training, with potential grace marks under consideration for their efforts.
