India's aviation industry is on a path of unprecedented growth, set to accommodate 500 million passengers annually by 2030 and reaching nearly 1 billion by 2047, according to industry leaders speaking at the Airport 360 Expo 2026. With significant fleet expansion and infrastructure development, the sector is among the world's top three domestic markets.
CEO of Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, BVJK Sharma, highlighted the rapid growth in domestic air travel, with a projected annual growth rate starting at 17%. Currently supporting the economy with USD 54 billion and providing millions of jobs, the sector's infrastructure is expanding at a remarkable pace with over 160 operational airports.
Sharad Kumar, Chief Advisor of the Airports Authority of India, emphasized the importance of strategic choices in navigating recent geopolitical challenges impacting routes and operational costs. He called for reducing dependence on foreign hubs and focusing on strengthening hub infrastructure and leveraging technology to position India as a global aviation hub.
