Lufthansa's New 'Economy Basic' Fare: A Game Changer for European Flights?
Lufthansa Group is launching a new 'Economy Basic' fare in Europe, limiting free carry-on baggage to a 'laptop bag or a small backpack.' The fare, set to begin gradually from April 28, allows for additional luggage as a paid add-on. It signals a shift in baggage policies among European carriers.
Lufthansa Group has announced the introduction of a new 'Economy Basic' fare aimed at offering a budget-friendly variant for European travelers. This new fare is set to challenge passengers with more stringent carry-on baggage policies, charging extra for items larger than a standard laptop bag or small backpack.
The 'Economy Basic' fare will be rolled out gradually starting April 28, with bookings available for flights from May 19 across Lufthansa’s brands. Positioned as a more economical option compared to the existing 'Economy Light,' it will include a fee-based option for rebooking reservations.
This move could set a precedent for other European full-service airlines, aligning them with U.S. practices of charging for extra in-cabin luggage. The decision comes amidst rising jet fuel prices due to geopolitical tensions, forcing airlines to reassess pricing strategies and financial outlooks.
