In a press conference on Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attributed the tragic road accident in Udhampur to negligence by the bus operator. Initial reports suggest lapses, including assigning a non-regular driver, resulted in the fatal incident.
The catastrophic accident occurred on April 20, when an overcrowded bus plummeted nearly 100 metres in Ramnagar, claiming 21 lives and injuring 51 others. Accompanied by Health Minister Sakeena Itoo and Transport Minister Satish Sharma, Abdullah met with the injured victims at Udhampur's Government Medical College hospital.
Emphasizing accountability, Abdullah assured strict government action post-inquiry and underscored the persistent issue of unsafe driving habits. While discrediting poor road conditions, he pointed to reckless driving behaviours as a recurrent menace. Authorities are urged to balance enforcement with public transport demand.
