In a significant Parliament session on Wednesday, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah detailed the hurdles faced by Bharat Taxi, a government-supported cooperative ride-hailing initiative, amidst its struggle against market leaders like Ola and Uber. The new platform is working to overcome resistance to digital adoption among select driver-partner groups by employing welfare and training strategies.
Formally inaugurated in February 2023 after its establishment in 2025, Bharat Taxi is ambitiously rolling out its services. It boasted 4.31 lakh driver-partners by March and operates in Delhi-NCR and several Gujarat cities. Plans are in place to scale operations to other regions over the coming years. The cooperative aims to offer sustainable earnings and social security to its drivers through innovative measures.
Unlike traditional platforms, Bharat Taxi leverages a zero-commission, subscription-based model, emphasizing cooperative governance and transparent pricing to maximize benefits for its drivers. As a result, it addresses long-standing gig economy challenges by offering ownership, decision-making power, and social security, while ensuring commuters enjoy cost-effective, secure rides.
