The United States has committed to providing up to USD 10 billion to Mesabi Metallics, a company in the Essar Group, for a significant minerals and manufacturing project in Minnesota. The announcement was made by the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum held in Tokyo last week.
EXIM stated that its financial support is facilitating nearly USD 30 billion in strategic deals aimed at bolstering America's supply chain security in collaboration with Indo-Pacific allies. Key figures in attendance included EXIM President John Jovanovic, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin.
The Mesabi Metallics project is set to integrate iron ore mining and processing into an operation producing approximately seven million tons of high-grade iron ore pellets annually. These pellets are crucial for modern steel production and US job creation, advancing America's energy dominance while reinforcing international economic partnerships.
