The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has levied a Rs 5 lakh fine against Snapdeal for the sale of toys lacking the necessary Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, in violation of the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020. This action follows the CCPA's discovery of toys on Snapdeal not complying with required standards.
Snapdeal, amidst facing penalties, has been directed to prohibit listing non-compliant toys and to improve consumer interaction by providing clear contact details for redressal. Snapdeal's spokesperson stated the platform is committed to safety, although it intends to pursue a judicial review concerning intermediary liabilities.
The CCPA's investigation exposed deficiencies in Snapdeal's product vetting process, resulting in ongoing sales of uncertified toys. It emphasized Snapdeal's responsibility to ensure all products meet safety requirements, reinforcing consumer protection and transparency mandates.
