Snapdeal Fined Rs 5 Lakh for Non-Compliance with Toy Safety Standards

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a Rs 5 lakh penalty on e-commerce giant Snapdeal for failing to comply with the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020. This order mandates Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for all toys sold in India.

CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare revealed that Snapdeal continued to sell non-compliant toys even after the requirement became effective in January 2021, despite the platform's claims of delisting. The investigation found several deficiencies such as lack of essential product details and inadequate due diligence.

Beyond the monetary penalty, Snapdeal must guarantee future adherence to the order, visibly display consumer support contacts, and ensure a safe and honest platform. This move is part of CCPA's broader initiative to protect consumer rights and foster a fair e-commerce environment.
