The body discovered on a Cyprus beach last month has been confirmed as Vladislav Baumgertner, the former CEO of Russia’s major potash company, Uralkali. Baumgertner, who was involved in a significant 2013 business dispute with Belarus, vanished from his Limassol home on January 7.
Cyprus authorities used DNA analysis to identify Baumgertner, 53, who was last seen in the coastal city. His body was discovered a week later on Avdimou beach, located on a British military base in Cyprus. These bases retained their administrative independence following Cyprus' 1960 independence from the UK.
The ongoing investigation by the British Sovereign Base Areas police aims to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding his death. In 2013, Baumgertner faced house arrest in Belarus over a spoiled partnership in potash trading, which deeply affected Belarusian economic interests. His sudden death has once again highlighted the complex intersections of international business disputes.
