Air India is taking precautionary measures by inspecting the fuel control switches of its Boeing 787 fleet, following a reported defect in one module. The specific switch, with only 3,440 operational hours since its installation in 2024, raised concerns when a pilot discovered the malfunction upon landing in Bengaluru. The module will undergo thorough checks by the original equipment manufacturer.
On February 1, challenges with the fuel control switch of the VT-ANX emerged before takeoff from London Heathrow. A subsequent investigation by aviation regulator DGCA found that the switch did not remain latched in the 'RUN' position during initial attempts. However, flight completion was unaffected as manual verification ensured safe operation afterward.
The issue has put the spotlight on Air India's Dreamliner fleet, consisting of 33 Boeing 787s. The aviation company has already inspected half of its planes with no additional issues found. The checks are part of a broader strategy to enhance safety, especially in light of a previous fatal crash linked to similar concerns.
