India's electronics export ambitions received a fresh push as Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal addressed the 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Mobile and Electronic Devices Export Promotion Council (MEDEPC), held at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, on October 29, 2025. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and representatives from across the electronics export ecosystem.
The AGM underscored India's emergence as a global electronics manufacturing and export powerhouse, highlighting sustained growth in exports, increasing domestic value addition, and a roadmap for achieving USD 180–200 billion in electronics exports by 2031.
Goyal Emphasizes Self-Reliance in Electronics Ecosystem
Addressing the AGM as Chief Guest, Shri Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of deepening domestic capabilities across the electronics value chain, particularly in the manufacturing of components, sub-assemblies, and finished products.
"Greater self-reliance in electronics, from chipsets to chargers, will ensure that India not only sustains its export momentum but also reduces import dependency. We must aim for leadership not just in smartphone exports, but across the broader electronics landscape," Goyal stated.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to building a robust, self-reliant, and globally competitive electronics sector, in alignment with the Hon'ble Prime Minister's vision of achieving USD 500 billion in total electronics manufacturing by 2030.
Electronics Exports See Record Surge in 2025
India's electronics sector is witnessing record-breaking growth, with overall exports touching USD 22.2 billion during April–September 2025, up from USD 15.6 billion in the same period of 2024—a 41.9% year-on-year growth.
Smartphone exports, a major growth driver, registered a massive 58% increase, rising from USD 8.47 billion to USD 13.38 billion in just six months. For the entire FY 2024–25, electronics exports hit USD 38.6 billion, reflecting a 32.6% rise over the previous fiscal.
India has now emerged as the third-largest smartphone exporter in the world, firmly establishing itself as a trusted partner in global value chains (GVCs) and demonstrating manufacturing resilience amid global supply disruptions.
Policy Reforms Powering Export Competitiveness
The Minister lauded the efforts of the DGFT and various export-promotion agencies in simplifying trade and enhancing India's export ecosystem. Key policy initiatives discussed included:
-
Customs automation for faster clearances
-
Single-window approvals across ports and industrial hubs
-
Export Facilitation Cells (EFCs) to resolve bottlenecks
-
Strategic use of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the EU, UK, and EFTA to unlock new markets
Additionally, schemes such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) are contributing to greater domestic manufacturing depth, especially in components such as batteries, camera modules, display panels, and chargers.
MEDEPC: Anchoring Industry-Government Synergy
As the apex export promotion council for mobile phones and electronic devices, MEDEPC plays a pivotal role in:
-
Identifying regulatory challenges and trade barriers
-
Facilitating industry-government dialogues
-
Promoting global brand visibility of Indian electronics
-
Supporting MSMEs and start-ups in the sector
At the AGM, MEDEPC reiterated its vision to help India achieve USD 180–200 billion in electronics exports by 2031, while enhancing value addition, ensuring green manufacturing compliance, and promoting advanced design and R&D capabilities.
Building Toward Electronics Export Leadership
India's rising electronics export profile is backed by:
-
Surging FDI inflows in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing
-
Robust infrastructure investments in electronics manufacturing clusters (EMCs)
-
Greater domestic sourcing of critical components
-
A growing focus on green energy integration and ESG-compliant supply chains
The AGM also noted that India's participation in global electronics manufacturing is no longer confined to assembly and low-cost labor, but is now evolving into a hub for high-value innovation, design, and end-to-end production.
From Assembly Hub to Global Electronics Powerhouse
With its latest export figures and policy support mechanisms, India is well on its way to transitioning from an assembly-driven export model to a design-led, innovation-powered electronics manufacturing ecosystem. The 4th MEDEPC AGM reaffirmed that by fostering public-private collaboration, maintaining policy consistency, and investing in high-quality infrastructure and R&D, India can secure its place among the top global electronics exporters by the end of this decade.
