Russian oil giant Lukoil is offloading its international holdings in reaction to US sanctions, as announced by President Donald Trump. The move aims to push Russia towards a ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Lukoil's statement indicates discussions with prospective buyers are underway, with asset sales planned during a grace period allowing transactions to continue until November 21. A company representative mentioned the possibility of requesting an extension to finalize deals. Lukoil's portfolio includes stakes in oil and gas ventures across 11 countries, with refineries in Bulgaria, Romania, and a 45% stake in a Dutch facility, besides owning gas stations globally.

The sanctions, spearheaded by Trump on October 22, target Lukoil and Rosneft, Russia’s top oil companies, comprising nearly 50% of the nation's oil exports. The sanctions create significant hurdles for these firms outside Russia, including potential secondary sanctions on foreign banks dealing with them, severely impacting business with the US financial system.

Further complicating the scenario, Germany's government has taken control of a Rosneft refinery stake in Schwedt, curtailing revenue flow. US sanctions focus on cutting Lukoil and Rosneft's supplies to India and China amid EU oil import bans. The sanctions raise uncertainty over Indian refinery purchases, as these companies provide 60% of India's Russian crude imports, according to Shumita Deveshwar of GlobalData TS Lombard.

In reaction to Trump's pressure on Indian and Chinese energy purchases, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked on the strategic importance of Russian products, emphasizing the role of individual countries in evaluating competitive alternatives.
