NITI Aayog's latest report underscores the pivotal role India's services sector plays in employment and economic growth. It employs nearly 30% of the workforce, a figure still shy of the global average of 50%. This discrepancy highlights a slower structural transition in the nation's job market.
The report, 'India's Services Sector: Insights from Employment Trends and State-Level Dynamics,' found that post-pandemic recovery has been linked to services, although challenges persist. Employment in services climbed to 29.7% in 2023-24 from 26.9% in 2011-12, creating 40 million jobs in the past six years.
The report calls for reforms to address the disconnection between growth and employment in services. Recommendations include formalizing the informal workforce, improving gender equity, and aligning education with sector demands. It emphasizes the need for targeted skilling and digital access to expand opportunities in rural areas and for women.
