In a tragic turn of events, a plane crash early Tuesday morning claimed the lives of 11 people in Kenya's coastal region of Kwale. The victims, mostly foreign tourists, were en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a popular safari destination.
Mombasa Air Safari confirmed that the ill-fated flight carried eight Hungarian tourists, two Germans, and a Kenyan pilot, all of whom lost their lives in the crash. The plane, a Cessna Caravan-type aircraft, went down in a hilly, forested area about 40 kilometers from Diani Airstrip, authorities reported.
Investigators, led by Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde, are probing the cause of the crash, which occurred amid heavy rain at 05:30 a.m. local time. Witnesses described a loud explosion followed by the discovery of a charred wreckage and unrecognizable human remains.
